Brett Evans Biedscheid is a freelance artist, designer and animator and recently joined the Banks Mill community as an affiliate member.
He recently graduated from the University of Derby studying an MA in Film and Photography and featured in the graduate show, Crosspoint at Art Core in October 2022.
Brett started his journey studying for a degree in fine arts at the University of New Mexico in the USA and during his studies he gravitated towards film and photography. At the time finances were limited, as well as access to equipment so Brett found inspiration in these obstacles, adopting a “less is more” approach; a path he still follows closely in his work.
Brett comments: “After working for a design studio in London for many years, I struck out on my own. My client list is predominately filled with charities, NGOs, artists, and musicians – most of whom approach me with very limited budgets. This allows me to apply the key aspects of my practice; often requiring the quick learning of new (or old) techniques and generally be as inventive as possible to achieve the desired outcome.”
“In 2020, I decided to take an aspect of my work and develop it further – self-narrative constructed landscapes. After several plane tickets, thousands of iPhone photos, and multiple trips to car boot sales, I received my MA in Film and Photography from the University of Derby.”
Brett is now eagerly on the lookout for fresh discussions and collaborations, knowing that with them come the opportunities to share his existing knowledge, and explore and learn new ways of working, and he is hoping that being part of the Banks Mill community will help him in his quest for new and exciting challenges.
Brett tells us about his work: “Although I work almost entirely digital now, I had a very analogue start. Endless hours in the darkroom or splicing film and VHS tape has guided my practise to where it is now – it’s both digital and ‘hands-on’.”
“At present I am working on a companion film to the body of work completed during my MA, ‘Leave to Remain’. This is a hybrid project, combining animation and footage – which I am travelling this winter to shoot. I am also always working to expand my arsenal of interesting taco recipes.”
