Little Ivy Designs specialises in the art of reimagining and rejuvenating second-hand furniture.
With a steadfast commitment to giving these pieces a fresh purpose in the modern era, seamlessly integrating them into the 21st Century aesthetic. Guided by the wonders of nature, Little Ivy Designs creates bespoke furniture, interior décor, lighting fixtures and paintings that harmonises beauty and functionality.
Alison Sutherland, the founder of Little Ivy Designs, draws continuous inspiration from the vibrant colours and striking shape contrasts found in the natural world. In response to the shift in her career trajectory due to the impact of COVID-19 on her singing pursuits, she transitioned to the realm of painting. Recognising the untapped potential residing in vintage items, she revitalises them through innovative approaches such as colour blending and freehand painted designs, with the help of Ivy the sprocker spaniel.
The duration of each project varies considerably and is contingent upon the condition of the selected pieces. Factors such as repairs, treatments, and prep work all need to be considered. Alison’s favourite technique for transforming these cherished objects is the application of vibrant colour blends as a base, followed by the more delicate freehand designs. To add an additional layer of intricacy, she employs Karisma colouring pencils to add extra detail.
Currently Alison is restoring a bamboo armchair set from the 1960’s, accompanied by a complementing coffee table. With a change from her customary freehand painting technique, she is using cacti transfer images and determining their optimal placements.
Devoted to personal growth and skill refinement, Alison actively pursues various avenues of learning. She participates in furniture painting courses to enhance her ability, while assembling a portfolio along the way. Alison is also attending the Painters Business Academy 2023 as well as networking and connecting with more local artists and businesses.
Little Ivy Designs became a part of Banks Mill with the purpose of connecting with individuals who share similar creative interests and to stay informed about noteworthy events and opportunities. Alison says: “As I work in my studio at home it is nice to get out and feel part of a community. I have great friends but the familiarity of a ‘Staff Meeting’ (the Banks Mill Clients Meeting) is a nice way to feel connected, inspired and motivated.”
