How would you describe your creative practice?
I’m a visual artist, currently working in pen and ink, and watercolour
Tell us a little bit about your journey so far, what made you want to start your own creative business?
I left school at 16 and dove headfirst into the working world. Over the years, I’ve worked in many different business sectors but always found my groove in the logistics and distribution departments of them.
For the past 15 years I’ve been working for a software company, travelling all around the UK, helping transport operators sort their systems and maximise their fleets. But last year, at the grand age of 55, I decided it was time to hang up my hi-vis and take a leap of faith. So here I am, swapping warehouses for watercolours and stubbornly refusing to get a “proper job”.
I've always been a bit of a doodler, but now I’m giving myself permission to turn my lifelong hobby into something real. Watercolour and pen and ink have stolen my heart, and I’m hoping they’ll take me somewhere magical.
How will being part of our community Banks Mill help your practice?
I’m hoping Banks Mill will be a guide for my creative journey—helping me figure out not only how to get to where I want to be, but also where that elusive “somewhere” might actually be! I’m a complete newbie to the creative industry and how it all works. I’m excited to learn about the business side of things—funding, galleries, collaborations—and to soak up all the inspiration from my fellow creatives.
What other work experience or training have you gained relevant to what you’re doing now?
I’m about to start a 12-week evening course at NTU called “The Art School Experience.” Fingers crossed, it’ll push me out of my comfort zone and into new creative territory!
What are you working on at the moment?
Right now, I’m focusing on making art without an agenda—just enjoying the process. Recent commissions have been lovely but a little stifling. I’d love to create a series of watercolours showcasing Derby’s architecture and maybe one on Derbyshire pubs.
Tell us a bit about your work and techniques.
My process is pretty straightforward (at least I like to think so). I usually start by visiting the subject—a building or area—taking photos and sketching on-site if I can. Back in the studio, I play around with composition in my sketchbook. Then I like to dive straight in with pen and ink—makes me feel brave! If it’s a particularly complex piece, I might use a pencil for the fiddly bits first. Watercolour comes next, starting with a base wash, then refining with layers. And the finally - adding all the fine pen and ink details at the end—my favourite part.
What are your plans for your creative practice for the next 12 months?
This year is all about learning and immersing myself in the creative world. No big financial targets—just soaking up knowledge and enjoying the ride. I plan to boost my visibility on social media, rebrand my website and enter a few competitions. Hopefully I can participate in a group exhibition but most importantly, surround myself with inspiring, creative people.
