Stage Left Lux specialises in creating unique feature lighting, as well as quirky vintage style lamps. They also restore and rewire antique lighting to continue their lifespan. The founder of Stage Left Lux shares that the company ‘was born out of my passion for lighting and to reduce waste, by repurposing old redundant household objects I can save waste by turning them into incredible feature lamps.’
The founder, Scott Trelfa, has always had a passion for all things lighting – especially theatrical lighting, props, and scenic design. Scott explains as a child he ‘would always be inventing various contraptions and going to the local electrical shop, Potts, to buy batteries bulbs and wires so I could make the creations that I had designed.’ He later built up his skillset when studying for a NVQ in electrical engineering at college.
He is grateful that the University of Derby acknowledged his drive for Stage Left Lux and allocated him a creative space at Banks Mill Studios. He is confident this supportive network will allow Stage Left Lux to continue to grow. Scott explains ‘I’ve only been in the building a week and only met a handful of the residents, but I have already formed some strong bonds which will hopefully lead to some collaborations going forwards.’ He also recognises that the support from the East Midlands Chamber will be invaluable when building soft business skills, such as expanding his audience through digital marketing.
Three customers came to visit Stage Left Lux’s within their first week at the studios. Customers wanted advice on a variety of situations:
- Rewiring a Royal Crown Derby table lamp
- Restoring a vintage chandelier
- Turning an antique ink well into a lamp
- Making wall lamps out of jars
They focus on designing and building bespoke lamps and custom-made light fittings. Stage Left Lux’s signature style is a unique blend of industrial steampunk and traditional country cottage by using a mixture of copper and reclaimed timber. He regularly upcycles vintage and antique lamps. He explains ‘‘I like to take a minimal or no-damage approach by respecting the history of the original object and creating as little damage as possible whilst turning them into lamps.’
In the next twelve months, Stage Left Lux is keen to grow their online presence, especially in the areas of bespoke and custom-made lighting. He is also keen to visit multiple markets and fairs to promote his products to other likeminded individuals.
