Introducing Minoan Mosaic Studio

Wed, 24/07/2019 - 10:52

Minoan Mosaic Studio is a new mosaic studio founded by artist/art educator Magdalena Aron in studio 1.3.

With a background in ceramics and a BA(Hons) degree in Visual Communication, Magdalena has over six years freelance experience in Media Design and Motion Graphics, followed by robust teaching experience in digital and traditional art. Her work experience is recognised by both public and private organisations with children/adult learning and art education as the central point of her expertise.

After a successful teaching career with creative projects in the UK as well as abroad, Magdalena decided to use her various skills in developing her own mosaic studio which she hopes will become a well-established artisans hub. The hope is to bring to Derby a craft that is more than 3000 years old and to reinvent it linking both the Mediterranean and British Art.

With an affinity for tiles and mural art, Magdalena is hoping to embrace various cultures such as the Mughal Art in India and their influence on the Arts and Craft movement in Britain, looking at the decorative style of Pre-Raphalites and imagining how their work would have been produced with the materials available in the 21st century.

With a team of talented people waiting to board this creative studio, Magdalena is hoping to develop and coordinate some international mosaic projects, with focus on the evolution of art around the globe, combining ancient knowledge with modern means.  "My mosaic studio is not only a physical institution, is a communal idea to bring back decorative art into people's lives and create a Moris/Edward Burne-Jones type cooperative."

Aside from the studio portfolio project, Magdalena will open the studio to the public, with regular Sunday morning workshops for both children and adults. Scheduled monthly workshops include one Sunday morning for adults 18+ "Mindful Mosaic" and one for children "Mosaic Fun". She also plans to introduce mosaic parties for adults and children, Craftnoon Tea Parties, Birthday celebrations, team building mosaic projects as well as corporate craft days.

The studio has a capacity for up to 12 participants. Mosaic materials will be carefully selected based on specific groups/abilities and client requirements. A range of work examples to chose from will be provided as well as refreshments.  Ungrouted mosaics can be grouted at home or could be left for grouting in the studio with a minimal cost. Children must be a minimum age of 7. To find out more about these workshops email Magdelana.  You can also follow Magdelana on Facebook and Instagram.  Look out for their new website coming soon.
