This collection of contemporary abstract art features mixed media paintings, sculptures, and articulated works. Each piece reflects the geological treasures and features that lie beneath the surface of Derbyshire.
In this exhibition, artist Jenny Marshall explores the hidden beauty of Derbyshire's underground landscapes. Her art celebrates the incredible gifts our planet has given us—minerals, rocks, and subterranean formations—whilst also addressing the ways we have often abused and neglected these natural wonders. Through moving and shifting layers of imagery and poetry, the work tells a story of both wonder and caution.
Sustainability is a core principle Marhsall’s practice. Using reclaimed and restored wood in all of her work, Marhsall gives new life to materials that might otherwise be discarded. This approach reflects her commitment to eco-friendly practices and establishes a tangible connection to the natural world that inspires her work.
Exhibition Highlights:
Abstract Mixed Media Collages and Paintings: Layers of various materials evoke the textures and complexity of Derbyshire's geological features, blending organic forms with poetic text to create a rich, immersive experience.
Sculptures: Created from reclaimed wood, these sculptures offer a tactile exploration of the earth's hidden beauty, inviting physical connection with the themes of sustainability and natural preservation.
Articulated works: Pieces that move in response to touch and encourage deeper engagement with the viewer as a collaborator through light and movement.
"Love Letters from the Earth Age" is more than an exhibition—it's a dialogue between the artist and the earth. Through this work, Marshall aims to inspire reflection on the beauty of our planet, recognition of human impact, and consideration of sustainable practices for the future.
Marshall hopes that Love Letters from the Earth Age will resonate with viewers' appreciation of the beauty that lies beneath our feet, and the relationship we have with the earth that grounds us.
